LSU to Host Terrorist Aftermath Rescue Training
The Louisiana State University Fire and Emergency Training Institute is launching new training for team members facing the aftermath of an incident of mass destruction.
The Terrorist Aftermath Rescue Training, to take place at FETI in Baton Rouge July 28-31, is a multi-track, four-day class that features expert instruction in disaster incident command systems and deployment operations designed for everyone involved with the disaster management administration and or response operations. This class will be an Urban Search and Rescue/Weapons of Mass Destruction training exercise.
Training will concentrate on hot zone operations; safety and security, assessing and stabilizing collapsed structures and patient treatment and transport. It also deals with disaster incident command responsibilities from an integrated management/unified command standpoint. Specific topics to be covered include collapse shoring operations, concrete breaching and breaking techniques, heavy metal cutting, heavy rigging/crane operations and technical search operations.
Note: The class consists of three tracks and the student will be able to participate in ONE track only.
I. The Basic Level Rescue Technician
This class consists of classroom instruction as well as a nighttime training drill. A large portion of the class will involve hands-on training such as exterior, interior, timber, pneumatic shoring and stabilization systems. This course introduces the participant to the basic knowledge and equipment used by US&R team members.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of the following classes: Firefighter I, First Responder, Hazardous Materials Awareness Level training.
II. The Advanced Level Rescue Technician
This class will mainly consist of hands-on skill stations, some classroom instruction, and a nighttime training drill. The first two days consist of a variety of skill stations that require the participant to utilize previously obtained knowledge to assess and stabilize a new complex structure in order to learn the challenges faced in a real-life situation.
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of the following classes: Firefighter I, First Responder, Hazardous Materials Awareness Level, and a FEMA compliant 80-Hour Rescue Specialist.
III. The Incident Command System
The Incident Command System course will consist of classroom instruction presented by guest lecturers. Topics of interest are brief overview of ICS positions, history and facts from previous large-scale incidents, tabletop exercises and a night deployment of a real-life exercise.
Prerequisites:
Successful training or experience in the following areas: Incident Command System, Emergency Management, or in the process of becoming an Incident Commander.
Note: There will be a 12-hour night drill beginning Friday night continuing into Saturday morning for ALL participants in the three tracks.
