Preview of the Wildland Fire Safety Summit
The program for the Seventh Annual Wildland Fire Safety Summit, scheduled for Nov. 18-20 in Toronto, is being finalized. Hosted this year by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the summit provides a rare opportunity to share international interagency information on today's safety issues.
This year's theme is protection on the fireline. Topics submitted so far include:
- Fire Behavior/Safety in Mountain Pine Beetle Killed Stands in British Columbia by David Marek and Mike Dittaro, British Columbia Forest Service.
- The 10 Essential Factors in Firefighting by Patrick Withen, University of Virginia and smokejumper for the USDA Forest Service.
- A Low-Cost Weather/Situation Monitor for Wildland Firefighter Safety by Robert Kremens, Jason Faulring and Andrew Gallagher, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y.
- The Safe and Economic Structural Health Management of Air Tanker and Lead Aircraft Involved in Firebombing Operations by Stephen R. Hall, Richard Perry and Joseph F. Braun, Celeris Aerospace Canada.
- Coordination of Safety Activities on Multiple-Employer Work Sites by Steve Bachop and Jim Price, British Columbia Forest Service.
- The Use of Leading Indicators to Measure the Performance of the Occupational Health and Safety System by Steve Oakley, Health and Safety Consultant, Electrical and Utilities Safety Association.
- Redesigned Fire Shelter Now Available for Wildland Firefighters by Leslie Anderson, USDA Forest Service.

- High Resolution Surface Wind Simulations in Complex Terrain and their Impact on FARSITE Simulations by Bret W. Butler, Ph.D., Fire Sciences Laboratory, Fire Behavior Project, Missoula, Mont.
- Predicting Spatially Explicit Burn Probability of a Landscape Under Extreme Weather Conditions by Wenbin Cui.
