The Fire Department Safety Officer Association announced the addition of a second online training program, this one targeted to health and safety officers.
The Fire Department Safety Officers Association recently announced the addition of a second online training program, this one targeted to health and safety officers. According to spokesman Bob Colameta, the FDSOA originally partnered with the Public Safety Education Network to create an online incident safety officer course. The success of that program led to the development of the online Health and Safety Officer Course, which is designed to dovetail with Occupational Safety and Health in the Emergency Services 2nd edition, written by James S. Angle.
The original ISO-oriented course prepares participants to take FDSOA's incident safety officer certification exam, and is offered in conjunction with Fire Department Incident Safety Officer, 2nd edition. MP3 files can be downloaded for easy access.
"The goal is to make sure that every firefighter has the opportunity to step off the apparatus and be able to identify the type of structure and the hazards that they are facing," Colameta said. "The incident safety officer program is good for everybody."
Colameta added, "We initially thought that the interest in online programs would come from the smaller departments, but it's turning out that the bigger departments are saying they can't come to the conferences."
The FDSOA tested its ISO online program with the FDNY; San Bernardino, Calif.; Littleton, Colo.; and the state of Ohio, prior to launch.
"Both the ISO and HSO programs are designed to be an alternative to conference-style learning," Colameta said. "Once we have firefighters' online learning, we can keep them interested in learning."
