IAFC Offers PASS Device Safety Tips

As MSNBC.com and NBC Nightly News continue to report on the issue of PASS devices failing in high temperatures, the International Association of Fire Chiefs is offering several recommendations for PASS device safety in fire departments.

As MSNBC.com and NBC Nightly News continue to report on the issue of PASS devices failing in high temperatures, the International Association of Fire Chiefs is offering several recommendations for PASS device safety in fire departments.

Although the fire service was first made aware of potential problems with PASS devices in December 2005, the national media has been reporting the story to a much larger audience in the past month.

On Feb. 8, MSNBC began a two-part series pointing out problems with PASS devices and concerns about firefighter fatality investigations. After the articles appeared on MSNBC.com, the IAFC Safety Health and Survival Section, chaired by Chief David Daniels, convened a working group to study the issues and provide recommendations to the board.

On Feb. 12, the IAFC board of directors adopted a policy statement addressing PASS standards, recommendations for manufacturers, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Firefighter Fatality and Prevention program and future investigations of firefighter deaths.

The IAFC also is working with the International Association of Fire Fighters to address long-term issues of firefighter death investigations.

After continued study of the situation, the IAFC is issuing these recommendations, provided by the Safety Health and Survival section, to fire chiefs:

  • Immediately test your existing SCBA’s and Pass devices along with related operational readiness systems.
  • Immediately contact your PASS device manufacturers and ask about any reported problems with the devices. Also ask what upgrades they will be offering to ensure the safety of the devices to meet the recent improved NFPA standard.
