Beyond the obvious bearing clear communication has on safety, new technological developments can provide an additional level of protection for firefighters. Already in use are speaker microphones that incorporate Global Positioning System technology.
The PTG GPS microphone from Pryme Radio Products, for example, is a remote speaker microphone that works with virtually any two-way radio. Not only does the device operate as a standard speaker microphone, but the GPS circuitry can relay the location of the user. The microphone can be set to send regular location reports automatically or whenever the microphone is keyed by the user. A location designation then displays at a monitoring location using the system's base station and a personal computer running dispatch or mapping software, allowing an individual's whereabouts to be tracked within a few meters.
Additionally, during an emergency situation the microphone's “Emergency/Panic” button signals the precise location of the user. Because the GPS microphone works with virtually any radio system, no additional frequencies or licensing is required.
