Motorola business involved in homeland security wins national quality award

The Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector of Motorola, Inc. has been named a 2002 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winner for manufacturing. To view the full announcement, visit: www.nist.gov/public_affairs/releases/baldrige2002.htm.

The Baldrige Award is the nation’s premier award for performance excellence and quality achievement. Motorola CGISS is a leading provider of integrated communications and information solutions to meet the mission-critical requirements of public safety, government and business customers worldwide.

“We are enormously pleased and honored by this recognition of our business-wide, continuous improvement process,” said Bob Barnett, Motorola executive vice president and CGISS president and chief executive officer. ”The assessment process provides an excellent opportunity to benchmark performance and identify opportunities to continue to do better. We hope our customers view this award as further evidence of our commitment to continuously improve the ways we serve them.

“This award belongs to our employees,” Barnett added. “The dedication and commitment of our associates worldwide - the incredible work they do every day - led to this achievement.

"Earning the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award acknowledges the rigorous quality disciplines in the Motorola business unit that serves the world's Homeland Security communications needs. This marks an outstanding example of the exciting, substantive and positive performance changes that are being led across the globe in Motorola Inc. today," said Chris Galvin, Motorola’s chairman and chief executive officer.

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, often described as "the standard of business excellence," was established by Congress in 1987 to promote quality awareness, recognize the quality achievements of organizations and publicize successful performance strategies. Motorola was a recipient of the Baldrige Award in the award’s inaugural year of 1988.

Applicants for the Baldrige Award are evaluated in seven categories: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resources focus, process management and business results.

This year 49 organizations submitted applications for the Baldrige Award in five categories: education, health care, manufacturing, service and small business. Since 1988, 49 organizations have received the Baldrige Award. Highlights of Motorola CGISS’ quality and performance achievements include:

  • CGISS ensures full organizational alignment through the use of “Performance Excellence Scorecards,” cascading strategic objectives down from the sector level into all businesses and support functions. In turn, these cascade into the “Personal Commitment” plans of all employees worldwide.

  • Customer listening and learning approaches are used to gather current and expected customer and market needs for strategic planning, new product development and business operation improvements.

  • “M-Gates,” an integrated product development and life cycle process, is administered by cross-functional product teams to ensure all key operational performance requirements are considered and addressed.

  • CGISS’ leadership and talent supply organization is fully integrated into the strategic planning process and connected by the key business strategies.

  • Motorola CGISS is the leading supplier of two-way radio communications equipment in every market and region served.
