Russians Put New Helicopter into Service

The Kamov Corp. has introduced a new multi-purpose, twin-engine helicopter developed according to Russian Ministry for Emergency Management specifications for a light helicopter for rescue and emergencies, including wildland fire control.

In addition to double-rotor construction to improve maneuverability, the KA-226 features a modular design. The passenger cab can be replaced by a cargo cab or medical-evacuation or crane modules, among others. According to the company, these modules can be changed out in 20 to 30 minutes at the airport.

For wildfire service, the KA-226 can carry either a fire crew in the cab or a bucket on the sling. An infrared camera is available.

The helos can reach a maximum speed of 214km/h and can travel 4.6 hours of 600km on one fuel load. The units have a hover ceiling at 2,500 meters and a flight ceiling at 5,000 meters. Other technical specifications include two 450hp Allison 250-C20R engines and eight-passenger capacities.

The Ministry for Emergency Management ordered five KA-226s. The first built by the Strela Corp. in Orenburg successfully passed all tests and certifications, the company reports, and is in service at Bashkortostan Regional Emergency Management Service.
