Emphasis on awareness of the early planning and design decisions that are tied directly to sustainable design through their evaluation of operations based design.

Cost Estimation as a Design Tool: A Comparative Analysis of Building Materials, Systems and Finishes
Candice Wong, RRM Design Group
Kirk Van Cleave, RRM Design Group
Brad Saylor, Leland Saylor Associates
Chief Tim Ottman, Facilities & Maintenance Div., Los Angeles County Fire Department

Panel members will discuss how to use a cost estimate as a design tool by exploring the advantages and disadvantages of various building systems, materials and methods, and the use of different quality levels of interior finishes. These items will be analyzed based on initial costs, long term maintenance costs, the ease of use, implications to construction schedules, availability of labor and materials, environmental friendliness, and design aesthetic. Major system alternatives (such as roof systems, exterior building skin systems, and structural systems) will be discussed, followed by interior finishes and trends in design. Attendees will leave this workshop with the understanding of what factors have the greatest impact on the cost of a typical project. They will learn simple comparative analysis, enabling them to make the most of their budget requirements.
