The San Francisco Fire Department recently upgraded the fitness facilities its fire stations in an effort to meet the revised International Association of Fire Fighters fitness protocol. The $500,000 project was funded through a FEMA grant.
The IAFF’s revised protocol recommended new standards for all in-house fitness facilities to ensure they are more up-to-date and maintained. Administrative sites in San Francisco, department headquarters and 47 fire stations received the equipment.
The department contracted Advantage Fitness Products, a fitness-facility planning, design, supply and service provider, to manage the project on behalf of the city and county departments. AFP provided specialized equipment and training support and will provide preventative maintenance.
"AFP is working closely with our health and fitness coordinator and our fitness trainers to ensure that the equipment meets their needs,” said Mindy Talmadge, San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson, in a press statement. "We are looking forward to raising the awareness of our members to the importance of their physical well-being and of supporting their continued efforts in making their good health a priority."
The 47 stations received state-of-the-art equipment, including Precor EFX ellipticals, recumbent bikes, stair climbers, power rack benches, weights and Paramount Functional Trainers. More than 350 pieces of equipment were supplied throughout the county.
