Jersey City Reopens Fire Station
Countless Jersey City (N.J.) firefighters have started their careers at the historic firehouse on Bergen Avenue over the past 99 years, so the completion of a massive renovation project at the home of Engine Company 19 was certainly reason to celebrate.
A rededication ceremony was held at the firehouse in June. In attendance were Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Fire Chief Michael O’Reilly, Fire Director Armando Roman and members of the city council. Retirees of Engine Company 19 also joined current members at the ceremony.
Very few modifications had been made to the 2-story brick building over the years. RSC Architects spearheaded the renovation design work, which included a new stair tower and completely redesigned second-floor personnel area. These upgrades along with new plumbing, electrical work, vinyl and epoxy flooring, and HVAC brought the facility into compliance with current building codes and accessibility requirements.
The design also accommodated a new kitchen and dining area, night watchman quarters, private offices, personnel dorm room, toilet and shower rooms and a lounge. A steel beam that had been in place above the bay doors was replaced and the brick-and-masonry façade was retouched.
