Treatment for Inhalation of Cyanide

According to the CDC, here are steps for treatment of cyanide inhalation.
  • Immediately remove the patient/victim from the source of exposure.
  • Evaluate respiratory function and pulse.
  • Ensure that the patient/victim has an unobstructed airway.
  • Immediately administer 100% oxygen.
  • Assist ventilation as required.
  • If breathing has ceased (apnea), provide artificial respiration.
  • Establish secure large-bore intravenous (IV) access.
  • Prepare a cyanide antidote kit, for use under a physician’s direction, for symptomatic patient/victims. See the "Antidote for Cyanide Poisoning" sidebar for antidotes.
  • Monitor for respiratory distress.
  • Seek medical attention immediately.

  • Read the main story, "House of Horrors," to learn why toxic chemicals emitted by furnishings and building materials may be killing firefighters.
