Emergency ServicesIn this podcast, FIRE CHIEF Editor Glenn Bischoff speaks with Mike McEvoy, EMS coordinator for Saratoga County (N.Y.) Emergency Services, which administers the Cyanokit as a standard operating procedure for treating victims of smoke inhalation.

According to McEvoy, the department has been using the Cyanokit for 2-1/2 years and has used it for eight victims who were pulled out of a burning structure; none of the victims were breathing and all lacked a pulse. Of these, six survived the ordeal. In contrast, over a 20-year period prior to adoption of the Cyanokit, fire victims in the same condition perished every time, McEvoy said.
