I have been involved with ems and the fire service for 32 years. I have worked for a large ems system that was part of a police agency for approximately 4 years. We had police officer emt's and paramedics in the ambulances with civilians. During this time of my career, a great deal of training including hands on was dedicated to scene safety, self defense and the use of pepper spray for self defense. During this training topics a hand to hand self tactics, use of medically oriented equipment for protection and restraining a patient were all taught. In this case, a strong offensive posture kept me or my fellow civilian employees from becoming targets.

Fast forward three decades, and now we teach none of these topics. We teach scene evaluation which is important, deescalation of the scene, and waiting for the police to secure a scene. Yes these skills are important, but we have failed to train our new generation of firefighters, medics and emt,s what to do if you have to fight your way out.

In my career, I have been shot at, had two knives pulled on me, been punched in the jaw, kicked pinched and wrestled. in all cases, I have come out on top, safe and mostly sound because I have resorted to the training I received in my early career that taught me how to take care of myself and my partner or my crew.

I currently am the fire chief of a small fire protection District and I carry a hand gun in my command car. I do not consider myself a violent person, but I do believe in being prepared to take care of my self and my crew. Plus I am just too old to take a lot of butt kickings anymore.

We should not be confrontational but should be ready and prepared to deal with confrontation and not simply run away. Sometimes waiting on the police is not an option, and sometimes it is.

There is no substitute for being able to take care of your self in these situations. The Boy Scout Motto applies here. BE PREPARED.
