Goshen, Mass., has selected Susan Labrie to be the town's new fire chief. She succeeds Chief Francis Dresser, who retired in July after more than 50 years as head of the Goshen Fire Department. Not only is Labrie the town's first female fire chief, she is the first woman to head a fire department in the state of Massachusetts. Labrie, 42, has been a volunteer firefighter with the department for 17 years. The department has 18 volunteers who respond to about 40 calls a year.… Fire commissioners of the newly formed Belmont — San Carlos (Calif.) Fire Department announced Bttn. Chief Douglas Fry as the department's new chief. Interim Chief Chuc Lowden left the post July 31. Fry has more than 30 years of fire service experience beginning with the Belmont Fire Protection District, which merged with the City of San Carlos in 1979 to form the South County Fire Protection Authority.… Pickens County, Ga., Commissioner Robert Jones has appointed Robert Winston as the county's first-ever paid fire chief. Winston is a 32-year veteran of the Boston Fire Department who retired from that agency after serving as a district chief for 16 years. Winston will be responsible for bringing together the six fire entities into one combination volunteer and career fire and rescue service.… Asst. Chief John Picarello was appointed chief of the Pembroke Pines (Fla.) Fire Department. He replaces Chief Vito Splendorio, who retired on June 1. Picarello, 44, was hired as a firefighter in 1984.… John R. Hawkins, whose public safety career has spanned more than 40 years, took the reins Aug. 1 of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection/Riverside County Fire Department. Hawkins, 59, recently served as a deputy chief with the Riverside County Fire Department and CDF. He also was recently recognized by CDF Director Ruben Grijalva as one of 17 certified fire chiefs in California.… After more than 20 years of serving on the IAFC's Hazardous Materials Committee, John Eversole has decided to step down as the committee's chairman. He will remain a member of the committee.… The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians announced that Pediatrics Committee Chair Tommy Loyacono, MPA, NREMT-P, will oversee operation of the Pediatric Prehospital Care educational program. Medical oversight will be provided by newly appointed NAEMT Medical Director of Pediatrics Lou Romig, M.D., FAAP, FACEP.… Holbrook (N.Y.) Volunteer Fire Department Second Asst. Chief Rick Gimbl was recently presented with the New York State Firefighter of the Year Award in recognition for pulling an unconscious 280-pound man from a blazing trailer. The award is presented by the Firemen's Association of the State of New York to a firefighter who displays extreme heroism at great personal risk.… Bullard has announced the promotion of John Hays to director of the emergency responder division. He joined the company in July 2000 as thermal-imaging product manager.
