U.S. Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) introduced the Volunteer Firefighter Fairness Act, H.R. 5537, which would require the IRS to properly respect the “volunteer” status of volunteer firefighters. Currently, the IRS classifies volunteer firefighters inconsistently in different regions of the country, which has led to confusion about the treatment of volunteer firefighters in relation to federal, state, and local laws.
