DHS Director Suzanne Mencer Resigns
The Congressional Quarterly is reporting today that Suzanne Mencer, director of the Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness, has submitted her resignation. Below is the article from Congressional Quarterly:
Senior Department of Homeland Security official C. Suzanne Mencer submitted her resignation Thursday, effective Jan. 31, 2005. Mencer, who is director of the Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness, sent an e-mail announcement to her staff saying that she wanted to spend more time with her husband and son in Colorado, according to a copy of the letter obtained by CQ Homeland Security.
Mencer, previously executive director of Colorado’s Department of Public Safety, joined DHS in October 2003 and has been in charge of distributing more than $3 billion in grants annually to state and local first responders.
“It is with sadness that I tell you all that I have submitted my letter of resignation to the President effective January 31st, 2005,” Mencer wrote. “As you probably know, I have been separated from my 17 year old son and my husband for these past 14 months. While I have been able to spend occasional weekends at home in Colorado, I don’t want to miss all of my son’s last year at home before he heads off to college,” she wrote. DHS officials were not immediately available.
