Calif. Deputy Chief Dies

Jeff Powers, deputy chief for Southern Marin (Calif.) Fire Protection District, died shortly after noon on June 26. He collapsed while talking with colleagues at the Sausalito (Calif.) Fire Department. Attempts to revive Powers were unsuccessful and he died in the hospital emergency room. Powers was 44 and had 23 years of service.

There have been 55 firefighter fatalities so far this year.
