IAFC recommends mounting flags on all fire trucks

As a symbol of unity and strength, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends that every fire department permanently mount an American flag on all fire apparatus.

"The placement of flags on fire trucks has long been a tradition in departments across the country, but the IAFC feels that the entire fire service needs to get together and show support to the country. I can't think of a better way to do that than by mounting flags on all of our trucks," said IAFC President John Buckman.

Recent visits by President Bush to the rescue and recovery efforts at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and the World Trade Center in New York City reinforced the role that the fire service plays in defending our nation. As the first responders to these incidents, fire and rescue service personnel made a great sacrifice to our country.

"On a daily basis, every firefighter and EMT looks at our flag with great pride. Their understanding of how the fire service fits into defending our country is beyond comprehension and without second thought," said IAFC President John Buckman.

Recommendations:

* Contact your local Veterans of Foreign Wars for help in obtaining the flags.

* Be creative in the placement of the flags, but make sure that they are visible from all directions.

* 2' x 3' seems to be the size of choice by departments that already have the flags mounted.

* If you would like to see a photo example of recommended flag positioning, please visit the Castle Rock (Co.) Fire and Rescue Department's Web site for a "how to" guide to mounting flags on all types of apparatus. Also included on the web site will be a list of equipment and tools needed. www.ci.castlerock.co.us/fire
