Apex (N.C.) Fire Chief Mark Haraway took the lessons of a devastating fire that caused the evacuation of 15,000 people and turned them into a textbook for disaster responders. According to the News & Observer, "Large Scale Incident Management" covers the events of the Environmental Quality fire of Oct. 5, where barrels of hazardous waste exploded and firefighters and police officers battled the blaze in a cloud of toxic smoke in a Raleigh suburb.
"We learned a lot," Haraway told the paper. "Within the first two hours we lost most of the government infrastructure that we were accustomed to."
Haraway told the paper that the most important lessons from that night came from preparation. The book can be purchased here.
