Asst. Fire Chief Dies at Accident Scene

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that Paintville (Ky.) Fire-Rescue-EMS Assistant Chief and EMS Director Christa Dawn Burchett died at the scene of an auto accident Tuesday morning. The 33-year-old chief had three years of service.

While on the scene, Burchett was evaluating and assisting a pregnant female patient. A coal truck that was coming over a hill towards the accident scene braked in icy conditions struck a police cruiser, then hit both Burchett and her patient.

The patient was pronounced at the scene. Police said she had not appeared to have suffered any major injuries in the initial vehicle accident. Burchett was transported to Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced at 10 a.m.
