FEMA and its partners recently released the 2012 National Preparedness Report (NPR). The report found that, while there are areas for improvement, the nation has increased its preparedness to address external threats, as well as to natural and technological hazards.
“This report illustrates areas of national strength to include planning, operational coordination, intelligence and information sharing, and other response-related capabilities,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, in a statement. “As we continually assess and aim to meet the full vision of the National Preparedness Goal, we must continue to build on the significant progress to date and address identified opportunities for improvement.”

The NPR reviewed 31 core capabilities across the report’s five mission areas: prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery. It identifies areas where the nation has made significant progress, acknowledges remaining opportunities for improvement, and “reinforces the important principles of national preparedness,” the report said. It also provides data on threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk to U.S. security and resilience, such as acts of terrorism, cyber attacks, pandemics, and catastrophic natural disasters.
The report was written in coordination with several federal departments and agencies, FEMA said. It reflects input from state, local, tribal and territorial governments, private and nonprofit sector partners, and the public.
