Folsom (Calif.) Fire Chief Dan Haverty will retire Oct. 25 after three years on the job. Haverty will continue his role as an assistant professor at the University of Southern California's School of Policy Planning and will teach at the Sacramento campus and in Los Angeles. No successor has been named.
Chief Lonnie Sachs of the West Alton (Mo.) Volunteer Fire Department, died in March of last year at the age of 45, just a few months after doctors discovered cancer in his small intestine. During this time with the department, he donated his own boat whenever the Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District was called on for a water rescue. Now, thanks to a $25,810 grant, the department has new rescue gear and a boat named in his honor. A grant from Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. paid for the new boat as well as rescue equipment such as survival suits, helmets, life jackets and a special sled used for ice rescue.
Bakersfield (Calif.) Fire Chief Ron Fraze will retire Oct. 11. Fraze started with the department in October 1985 and was appointed chief in May 1998.
Watervliet (N.Y.) Fire Chief Don Clickner will retire because of an injury to his left shoulder. While cortisone shots and two surgeries have helped Clickner as he continued his 23-plus years in the department, his doctor recently said he would either need another surgery or would need to retire.
Neosho (Mo.) Chief Greg Hickman will retired after 37 years of service. Hickman chose early retirement to save younger firefighters' jobs from being eliminated. Deputy Chief Mike Eads, who was scheduled to be laid off before Hickman announced his decision, will now move up to fire chief.
Livingston (N.C.) Fire Chief Charles Schilling (Ret.) received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA). Schilling, who retired in 1990, was chief of the Livingston Fire Department for 36 years.
Joseph P. Clarke Jr. died July 24 at the age of 83. He was a member of the Hasbrouck Heights (N.J.) Fire Department Engine Co. 2 and served as fire chief from 1977-79. He also was a member of the Firemen Relief Association and the Exempt Firemen Association and the Hasbrouck Heights Ambulance Corps.
After 11 years at the head of the Vancouver Fire Department, Chief Don Bivins will retire at the end of the year.
Deputy Eric Norlin of Lincolnshire-Riverwoods (Ill.) Fire Protection District retired. He is still working at the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District as a part-time civilian employee, serving as division chief of the fire-prevention bureau.
