President George W. Bush has appointed Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge to a new Cabinet-level position to oversee homeland security.
Ridge will be responsible for creating a national strategy to prepare the nation for any future terrorist attacks as well as work to prevent attacks. The job will coordinate 40 overseas and domestic intelligence and federal, state and emergency preparedness offices.
The president also has created a Deputy National Security Advisor for Combating Terrorism, which will have some overlapping duties with Ridge's new office.
