Campus Firewatch Media Project Launched

The Campus Firewatch Media Project, jointly sponsored by Campus Firewatch, the People's Burn Foundation and the Michael H. Minger Foundation, will provide an opportunity for students to write original material and be published each month throughout the 2008–2009 academic year in Campus Firewatch, the leading national publication on campus fire safety. Each submission will be reviewed by a national panel of judges and the author of each article that is selected will receive a $500 stipend. This project is open to all full-time college and university students and high school seniors across the nation.

"There are three goals to this project," said Ed Comeau, publisher of Campus Firewatch. "They are to encourage students to learn more about fire safety, to provide an opportunity for students to get published and to develop content for Campus Firewatch from a student's perspective on the fire safety problems and issues. This will provide an invaluable insight for the campus fire professional into how to develop programs that will work effectively with the millennial generation."

Reviewing the submissions will be a panel of experts from the field of fire safety that include:

  • Ed Comeau, publisher of Campus Firewatch;
  • Janet Wilmoth, editorial director of Fire Chief Magazine;
  • Bobby Halton, editor in chief of Fire Engineering Magazine;
  • Dan Jones, editor in chief of National Fire & Rescue Magazine and Chapel Hill (N.C.) Fire Chief;
  • Shawn Longerich, director of the People's Burn Foundation;
  • Gail Minger, director of the Michael H. Minger Foundation; and
  • Jerry Naylis, fire series acquisitions editor, Pennwell Publications.
This project is now open for submissions that will be published monthly beginning in September 2008 with the launch of National Campus Fire Safety Month. More information, rules and guidelines can be found online at www.campus-firewatch.com.
