Mario Trevino, chief of the Bellevue (Wash.) Fire Department for four years, has retired. Trevino, who also spent more than two decades with the Seattle Fire Department, retired after a six-month absence to undergo cancer treatment. Deputy Chief Mike Eisner has been named the interim fire chief.
Mike Kalina has been hired as EMS coordinator and battalion chief for the Bristol Kendall Fire Protection District in Yorkville, Ill. He previously served as chief of the Homewood (Ill.) Fire Department.
Juan Adame, a former Austin, Texas, fire chief and fire protection inspector for the Navy, has been appointed acting chief of the Sugar Land (Texas) Fire Department. He served in the position of acting chief for at least a year, the city said in a statement, "allowing senior staff an opportunity to pursue educational opportunities required for the department's top leadership post." Sugar Land has been without a fire chief since former chief Dannie Smith abruptly resigned in September 2008. Asst. Chief Clay Fenwick had been serving as interim chief.
The Edgerton (Wis.) Fire Protection District offered two volunteers paid, full-time positions as fire chief and deputy chief. Brian Demrow will assume the fire chief's position and Ryan Beckwith is the new deputy chief.
In an effort to save money, Fire Chief Scott Garland's contract with the town of Hopedale, Mass., has not been renewed. Instead, a public safety director will be hired to oversee personnel and budgets for both the police and fire departments.
Double Springs, Ala., Fire Chief Mike Gilbreath died when a car struck and killed him while he was removing a tree from a county road.
East Bridgewater, Mass., Deputy Fire Chief Robert Fairburn died in late March after a car he was working on fell on him.
