USFA Releases 2005 Firefighter Fatality Report

The U.S. Fire Administration has released a report detailing the 115 firefighter fatalities it classifies as on-duty deaths that occurred in the United States in 2005.

The 115 deaths resulted from 109 incidents. There were four incidents involving multiple firefighter fatalities; those incidents accounted for 10 lives lost.

The average age of firefighters who died in 2005 was 47 years — the youngest was 18 and the oldest was 76. Vehicle crashes took 25 lives. Heart attack was the cause of 55 deaths.
