NFPA Establishes Engineering Scholarship
In honor of the December retirement of Arthur E. Cote, the National Fire Protection Association has established a scholarship in his name to recognize and offer support for individuals pursuing a career in fire protection engineering.
In 1977, Cote came to NFPA charged with the responsibility of technical oversight and special projects. Prior to his recent retirement, he was executive vice president and chief engineer overseeing 10 operating departments. Cote is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the leading authorities on fire sprinkler protection and technology.
Cote is current president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, vice chair of the American National Standards Institute Board of Directors, and vice chair of the Confederation of Fire Protection Associations International.
The Arthur E. Cote Scholarship is for undergraduate students enrolled in fire protection engineering programs. The scholarship is part of the NFPA Memorial Fund established in 1992 to honor individuals who are or have been strong fire safety advocates. The fund is administered by a committee appointed by the NFPA Board of Directors.
A college or university will be allowed to nominate one or two full- or part-time undergraduate students enrolled in a fire protection engineering program who intend to pursue a career in fire safety engineering and exhibit scholarship achievement, leadership qualities, and concern for others or active volunteerism.
A minimum of one scholarship per year of at least $5,000 will be awarded to one or more undergraduate students enrolled in fire protection engineering programs in either the United States or Canada. Applicants nominated by his or her college or university must submit a completed application, a nomination letter addressing qualifications and achievements and undergraduate academic transcripts in English with a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. All materials must reach the committee no later than April 1.
Applications for NFPA scholarships and contributions to the Fire Safety Educational Fund can be sent to: NFPA Fire Safety Memorial Fund, Attn: Christine Ellis, 1 Batterymarch Park, Quincy, Mass. 02169 -7471. Inquiries may be sent via e-mail to Christine Ellis.
