DHS/FBI Warn Terrorists May Use Public Safety Vehicles, Uniforms

According to information posted by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation have issued a joint "information bulletin" warning that terrorists may use public safety or service industry uniforms, identification or vehicles to compromise security.

“Individuals may pose as public safety officers to gain access to an otherwise restricted area, to assist in smuggling weapons or contraband into a secure location, or to provide cover for criminal activity,” the bulletin, dated Dec. 22 states. “In addition, terrorists may seek to use public safety uniforms or vehicles to conduct surveillance, facilitate an attack on a facility, or deliver a secondary attack targeting legitimate first responders.”

The bulletin advises that the identity of all public safety and delivery personnel be verified before allowing access to secure facilities and recommends public safety organizations undertake specific protective measures.
