Signal Hill (Ill.) Fire Chief Greg Render was named the top chief in the volunteer sector by the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association.

Lake City (Fla.) Fire Chief Carlton Tunsil has been appointed acting police chief. He also served as interim police chief in 2008.

North Watcom (Wash.) Fire and Rescue Chief Tom Fields was named chief of the year by the Washington Fire Chiefs Association.

Pat Gaffney has been named chief of the Tallmadge (Ohio) Fire Department, effective July13. The former assistant chief is a 33-year veteran of the department.

Reno (Nev.) Fire Chief Paul Wagner, who received a vote of no confidence from union firefighters last fall, is resigning effective July 20. Operations Chief Gary Neilson has been named acting chief.

Gary Boyles has been fired as chief of the Rodeo-Hercules (Calif.) Fire District, at least in part because he advocated the use of the Pack Test, or Work Capacity Test, for his firefighters who respond with strike teams to interagency wildland fires. The pack test requires that a person carry a 45-pound pack for three miles in less than 45 minutes and is a standard test used by federal land-management agency firefighters and other organizations. The union opposed the use of the pack test in favor of the Candidate Physical Ability Test.
