Lawmakers Block FIRE Grant Amendment Offering

The House Rules Committee, which sets the rules for debating a bill on the House floor, would not allow an amendment that would have added $40 million to the FY 2010 FIRE Grant funding, according to the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association and the Fire and Emergency Manufacturers and Services Association's Government Affairs Committee.

Reps. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), Jason Altmire (D-Pa.), Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Steve Austria (R-Ohio) were expected to propose the amendment today. Instead, Rep. David Price (D-N.C.), chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, is expected to offer what is called a "manager's amendment" that will include a $10 million increase for the FIRE Grant program.  If the manager's amendment is adopted, the grant program would be funded at $390 million in FY 2010.
