The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the USFA have announced the first round of the 2002 Fire Prevention and Safety Grants. This first round of grants is awarded to 35 fire departments and organizations throughout the United States. The monetary investment announced in this round exceeds $2 million dollars.

The funds are a part of the 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. There were 480 applications submitted to the 2002 grant program. Unlike the competitive grant process, other organizations were encouraged to apply, especially national, state, local or community organizations that were recognized for their experience and expertise in fire prevention or safety programs and activities. Priority was given to projects focusing on the prevention of fire-related injuries to children. Many of these awards represent innovative solutions for the delivery of fire prevention activities throughout the United States.

A list of all current 2002 Fire Prevention and Safety grant award recipients announced to date is posted on the USFA Web site, www.usfa.fema.gov.
