Fire Chief Names 2005 Chiefs of the Year

Fire Chief Editorial Director Janet Wilmoth and Pierce Manufacturing Inc. President John Randjelovic presented the 10th annual Chief of the Year awards Aug. 12 at Fire-Rescue International in Denver.

Chief Shane Ray of the Pleasant View (Tenn.) Volunteer Fire Department is the 2005 Volunteer Chief of the Year. Ray, who is a career fire lieutenant in the neighboring city of Brentwood, has a 21-year career in the fire service. He holds a bachelor's degree in fire protection administration from Eastern Kentucky University. The first vice president of the International Association of Fire Service Instructors and president of the Cheatham County Firefighters Association, he is an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy.

2000 Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year Fred Windisch nominated Ray.

Chief Richard “Smokey” Dyer of the Kansas City (Mo.) Fire Department is 2005 Career Chief of the Year. The 1998-1999 IAFC president and a nine-year member of its board of directors, Dyer has a 39-year career in the fire service and holds a master's degree in public administration. He has also served as the chief deputy fire marshal for the state of Missouri and as assistant professor of fire science at Central Missouri State University.

The Missouri Valley Division of the IAFC and the Missouri State Association of Fire Chiefs nominated Dyer.
