Smeal recently delivered a versatile pumper to the Cummington (Mass.) Fire Department. The new unit includes several features that allow it to operate in many situations and under many weather conditions.

First, the pumper is built on a Spartan Mountain Star 4x4 chassis for responses in mud and snow. To give added traction, it’s equipped with On-Spot automatic chains for quick and easy actuation.

To maximize the firefighting capability, the rig has a Waterous 1,500gpm midship pump, a big UPF 1,000-gallon poly water tank and a Waterous Eclipse compressed-air foam system. Studies have shown that "bubbles beat water," and CAFS can be used effectively on many types of fires.

The top-mount pump panel gives the operator a 360° view of the incident scene from an elevated position safely above the ground, away from charged hoselines and out of the flow of traffic. For added safety, the rear of the apparatus sports reflective yellow chevron striping to alert oncoming motorists.

Finally, the pumper is equipped with an Onan 15kw generator for plenty of reserve power and a Will Burt elevating light tower to provide good illumination of the scene.

Good traction, enhanced fire suppression, a safe operating environment, and plenty of electrical power and lighting are an excellent combination that can produce a versatile pumper for all reasons and all seasons.
