Apparatus Close Calls on the Web
The Firefighter Close Calls Web site provides ongoing information about near misses and injuries resulting from a variety of incidents, including accidents involving fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles.
The site provides first-hand narrative descriptions and photos from emergency personnel across the country who were involved in close calls involving fire and rescue apparatus, ambulances, police cars and other vehicles.
Many of the reports include descriptions of the corrective action taken by the departments or agencies following specific incidents. For example, one case involved an automobile that struck a parked fire engine while the crew was extricating a victim from an earlier motor vehicle accident. As a result, the department installed reflective chevron striping on the rear of its apparatus to better catch the attention of oncoming drivers. It also provided reflective vests for personnel operating along roadways to improve their visibility.
