Three Die in Apparatus Accidents

A career captain and two volunteer firefighters died in separate accidents while responding to emergency calls in fire department apparatus.

A captain in Connecticut died when the engine he was riding in was struck by another apparatus as the two vehicles entered an intersection on the way to a reported kitchen fire. The victim and the driver of the engine were both ejected upon impact and suffered massive head trauma. Eight firefighters were injured in the event.

A volunteer firefighter in Alabama died while driving a department tanker on the way to a structure fire. As the victim made a sharp turn onto a county road, the tanker left the roadway and overturned.

Another volunteer firefighter in Maine died while responding to a call when the tanker he was driving overturned after rounding a curve. The vehicle came to rest on the passenger side, and the victim died at the scene.
