About 30,000 people — most outside the arena — are expected to attend the memorial today for the firefighters lost June 30 in the Yarnell Hill Fire. The service will begin at 2 p.m. EST.
A tentative program for the event lists remarks from Prescott fire officials, Gov. Jan Brewer and Vice President Joe Biden, who was expected to arrive this morning. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a former Arizona governor, also will attend.
During the ceremony, the families of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots will be presented with American flags. The ceremony also will include the ringing of a bell — three rings symbolize the beginning or the end of a firefighter's shift.
The 20th member of the crew, Brendan McDonough, who was not caught up in the blaze that killed his fellow firefighters, is set to deliver "the hotshot's prayer."
