For any existing fire station, remember that common sense, off-the-shelf products and tune ups to your systems are still some of the most cost-effective methods to save energy.
Reduce or eliminate air infiltration. Seal door frames with sealant; fix or install weatherstripping, thresholds, sweeps and closers on doors. Seal windows and add storm windows for added protection.
Replace old thermostats with setback t-stats; insulate the water heater, tune-up HVAC units and furnaces. Balance the system, clean and insulate ducts.
Add or fix insulation in walls, foundations and ceilings. Properly vent attic spaces. The list is almost endless. Take advantage of local energy analysis programs and grants to tune up and save money.
