Ga. Department Installs Rainwater Harvesting System

Canton (Ga.) Fire Station No. 2 has installed equipment to harvest the rainwater from the roof of the station and part of the driveway. The water will be filtered and stored in four 1,700-gallon, in-ground cisterns and will be used to wash fire trucks, flush toilets, and irrigate the property.

Diane Minick, watershed director for the Upper Etowah River Alliance, secured a combination of grants to fund the project, including a couple from The Nature Conservancy and World Wildlife Federation.

The fire station installation will be featured in an upcoming History Channel special on the Tri-State Water Wars. The segment puts a lens on the decades-long battle between Georgia, Alabama, and Florida over the water from Lake Lanier and will highlight solutions such as rainwater harvesting.
