Earlier this month at the Symposium in the Sun, the Coventry (Conn.) Fire Department received the Vehicle Safe Operations Achievement Award, sponsored by VFIS. The department experienced zero vehicle accidents during the period of June 1, 2011, to May 31, 2012.

Here, Chief Joseph Carilli talks about the department's driver-safety initiatives, including the signing of a safety pledge. The department requires members who drive to calls — including in personal vehicles — to take the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) at the Connecticut Fire Academy. It also holds annual driver recertification and requires annual physicals for fire and ambulance vehicle operators.

I know it is very important to have safe drivers under the wheel of $600,000 dollar and up trucks! I have driven a School Bus and Fire trucks of all kinds and have never had a scratch put on one or the other! I was told by a very young kid I had to take the course he offered. I am sorry I told him ,you have wrecked three trucks in two years, I don't think you can show me any thing! As a volunteer for 37 years and veteran of vietnam I have driven long wide overlaods ,over the road! My quetion to him was you can grandfather me in. He said no so I let that department of 36 years and was called by another to join them. I called the state and they said I should have been Grandfathered in with my record of no accidents! Just wanted you to know there is a person somewhere that doesn't need new people showing old ways by new kids! Still Keeping my accident free and not hurt record in tack! God Bless! Carl

As the rate of accidents is increasing day by day so it is important to maintain safety driving. Accidents are common at workplace and industries and we need to follow safety measures to avoid any kind of accidents.

Every department must focus on safety driving like fire department and train the drivers to follow all rules and safety methods.
