A moonbeam woke me today at 4:11 a.m. A big, white, full moon beaming through the curtain pulled me out of my sleep, it was so bright. I surrendered, got up and sat on the deck outside. Then I remembered today is Sept. 11.
A lot has been written lately about remembering that horrific day two years ago. Remember--remember everyone implores.
No one can forget. No matter how hard some try to get on with life, we remember. We may not remember it the same way as someone who lost a loved one, but we remember. We don't have the same vivid memories as those that responded and were there, but we still have our own memories of that day and that period of time.
My own world changed the night my Dad died eight years ago. I remember minute details of that day, yet few outside our family do. I remember the same big, white full moon stared down at me on the night he died.
People haven't forgotten Sept. 11, 2001. Life and time have a way of continuing on with or without us, but that doesn't lessen the ache or hurt. Reminders are still with us -- the unfound remains, the damaged families and the perpetrator that is still alive somewhere in the world.
Remember? Yes, we remember, maybe not as intimately as those who lost family or friends and live with the pain daily. We have only to look in their eyes and we remember Sept. 11, 2001. We remember and honor in our own individual ways, some more private than others.
Today, the world will still take 24 hours to turn a day. The moon will disappear and the sun will rise and set. We'll keep going through our routines, but please don't think we have forgotten. We do remember.
"He also serves who only stands and waits." Or prays.
