Mich. Cross-Training Plan Comes Under Fire

The city of Wyoming, Mich., will offer an annual bonus of up to $2,500 to workers who become reserve firefighters, but current paid-on-call firefighters are expressing frustration that they will see no incentives under the plan.

From the Grand Rapids Press, via MLive: The city of Wyoming, Mich., will offer an annual bonus of up to $2,500 to workers who become reserve firefighters, but current paid-on-call firefighters are expressing frustration that they will see no incentives under the plan.

"That's their biggest beef: Why do (new paid-on-call firefighters) get an incentive and the existing ones do not?" Fire Chief Bob Austin said. "What they're just looking for is equality."

The city and its unions of supervisors and general city employees have inked memorandums of understanding about a firefighter training program for non-public safety staff. The payment will be pro-rated based on the number of times a city worker was willing and able to respond to a fire call. Read the entire article here.
