Iowa Mayor Creates Public-Safety Director Job; Axes Police, Fire Chief Positions

The positions of police and fire chief will be axed in favor of two assistants to the director drawn from current police captains and fire battalion chiefs.

From the WCF Courier: Unions for Waterloo’s police officers and firefighters said they look forward to working with the mayor in a reorganization announced this weekend that creates a director of safety services.

Mayor Buck Clark said the plan will move current police chief Dan Trelka to the newly created director's slot beginning Jan. 1. The positions of police and fire chief will be axed in favor of two assistants to the director drawn from current police captains and fire battalion chiefs.

The mayor announced the plan to union officials and police and fire command staff during a Friday afternoon meeting. He said the reorganization will continue to keep the two departments separate. Read the entire article here.
