Indiana Ethics Commission Tackles Fire Department Nepotism

The Valparaiso commission voted in March that it would be a violation of the ordinance's wording on director responsibility for David Nondorf to be chief after his son was hired on the department.

From the Northwest Indiana Times: An ethics commission in Valparaiso, Ind., made it clear the proposed amendment to the ethics ordinance on nepotism does clarify the issue it faced concerning Fire Chief David Nondorf.

The commission voted in March that it would be a violation of the ordinance's wording on director responsibility for Nondorf to be chief after his son was hired on the department. The amendment would allow family members to serve together in any city department as long as policies, procedures and/or collective bargaining agreements required recusal in situations where one family member would be directly involved in the hiring, firing, promotion or discipline of another.

The final decision whether to keep Nondorf as chief is up to Mayor Jon Costas. Nondorf has remained as interim chief while the issue is worked out by the council and the commission. Read the entire article here.
