From Tulsa World: Only Tulsa (Okla.) Fire Department's 30 stations — Station No. 51, which serves Tulsa International Airport - responds to calls within five minutes at least 90% of the time — a standard set by the National Fire Protection Association.
An additional five stations come within 2% of the standard, according to a Tulsa World analysis of department data. The World reviewed more than 116,000 calls to the department since 2008. They ranged in type, from fires to medical emergencies to downed power lines.
Most of the slower-responding stations are located in the south or east portions of the city, where the department cannot keep up with residential and commercial development, fire officials said. A single station in those areas typically covers more than 25 square miles, yet some stations in downtown or midtown Tulsa cover as little as four square miles, TFD reports show.
