N.J. Township Scraps Plans to Merge Fire, Police Chief Jobs

The Teaneck Township Council officially eliminated the newly created position of public-safety director Tuesday night, backing away from a controversial plan to combine its police and fire departments under a civilian boss.

The decision came a month after Police Chief Robert Wilson – who was to have been Teaneck’s first public safety director – withdrew his retirement papers after the police union filed a lawsuit seeking to halt the change.

Without a vacancy in the police chief’s office, the law creating a public safety director and abolishing the positions of police and fire chief had to be removed from the books. Read the entire article here.
