Firefighter-Residency Debate Heats Up in St. Louis

A state bill will allow St. Louis Fire Department employees to move outside the city limits after they've served the department for seven years.

From KSDK: St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is challenging a bill signed by Gov. Jay Nixon that changes the rules about where city firefighters can live, saying it is a city matter, not a state matter.

The bill will allow St. Louis Fire Department employees to move outside the city limits after they've served the department for seven years. At present, city law requires all fire department employees to live in the city.

The city firefighter's union appealed to state lawmakers to create the bill, saying the city rule is unfair as city police, teachers, prosecutors and the airport director don't have to live in the city their entire careers. The union said it tried to get the issue on the city ballot, but the St. Louis Board of Alderman shot it down last spring.
