Sheboygan Faces Station Closures

In March, the council failed to reach the two-thirds majority needed to lift the city's hiring freeze to add firefighters needed to staff the stations.

A Sheboygan Press editorial: Earlier this year, Chief Jeff Hermann began a series of rolling brownouts because the Sheboygan (Wis.) Fire Department didn't have enough firefighters to fully staff all five. Last week, the strategic fiscal planning committee said the city should work to keep all stations open. But this would require four additional firefighters, so the common council must OK spending the estimated $240,000 to hire the personnel. The council could act as soon as tonight.
