From the Times Herald: Terry L. Shaffer, the fire chief of a volunteer company in Shanksville, Pa., about 300 miles from New York City, was in the midst of his workday on Sept. 11, 2001, unaware of how the world events unfolding would soon envelope his backyard.
“I remember being at work at Pepsi and sort of getting bits and pieces of what was going on in New York City,” Shaffer said, noting it’s “a little hazy” in his memory about whether he knew a plane had crashed into the Pentagon.
Flight 77, carrying 64 people from Washington Dulles International Airport headed to Los Angeles had crashed into the Pentagon around 8:21 a.m. So when Shaffer got a phone call from his wife shortly after 10 a.m., indicating a plane had crashed in a field in Shanksville, Shaffer said his reaction was immediate.
