Sacramento Firefighter Union Agrees to Pension Contributions

Firefighters' Local 522 has become the first public-safety union in the Sacramento to agree to contribute to pension costs, with members agreeing to pay 6% toward their pensions.

From the Sacramento Bee: Firefighters' Local 522 has become the first public-safety union in the Sacramento to agree to contribute to pension costs, with members agreeing to pay 6% toward their pensions.

Firefighters also agreed to delay a 5% raise that originally was due in 2008. The union had previously agreed to postpone the raise until January 2012. Under the new pact, the raise will kick in Jan. 1, 2013.

The labor leaders, in their announcement, said the delayed salary increase will save the city about $3.5 million in the next calendar year. Another $3 million a year will be saved through firefighters' pension contributions.
The 6% pension contributions also will start Jan. 1, 2013, the same day as the 5% pay increase. Read the entire article here.
