Colo. Department Takes Democratic Approach to Chief Selection

From the Colorado Springs Gazette: The fire district in Peyton, Colo., is considering giving volunteers the ability to pick their new boss — a move that could stabilize a department that has seen six chiefs in six years.

Twelve firefighters resigned in early February because of conflicts with their fire chief. Three weeks later, the board voted to eliminate the chief’s position and instead rely on a volunteer.

Ten of the 12 firefighters since have returned to duty.
Capt. Sharon Brown will serve as an interim department head. She will remain in the position until the board of directors decides whether it will appoint the next fire chief or allow firefighters to elect their new leader.

Peyton allowed firefighters to elect their chief until 2005, when the elections were nixed in favor of having the board appoint the top position. The department had two chiefs in 25 years under the previous model. Read the entire article here.
